What it is

The Sargent No. 407 is the Sargent & Company equivalent of the Stanley No. 2. Made in New Haven, CT. Existed in several variants: pre-lateral (no lateral adjuster), first lateral (horseshoe lateral), brass oval cap lever, rectangular brass logo. Each variant has a different collector standing.

Dating

Variant is identified from the lateral adjuster (shape and placement), lever cap profile, and logo. Pre-lateral (no lateral) is the earliest and most valuable. Sargent's Sweetheart-era equivalent is less precisely documented than Stanley's.
