Character
The Stanley No. 10 is a carriage maker's rabbet plane — an open-sided bench plane in which the iron extends to the full width of the sole, originally intended for the rebate and panel work of carriage construction.
Within the Stanley range the No. 10 occupies a distinct position: it combines the body proportions of a bench plane with a rabbet plane configuration. This makes it useful wherever a standard smoother or jack plane is limited by its closed sides.
Construction
Cast iron open-sided body in which the cutter spans the full sole width. The Bailey adjustment system provides standard depth setting. The front knob follows standard bench plane layout.
The No. 10 was produced across several type variants following the general Stanley type periodisation. English-made examples are common in the European market.
Use
Primarily for rebate and housing work on larger stock where shorter rabbet planes such as the No. 78 or No. 98/99 lack sufficient body length. The original carriage making application used the plane's length to smooth panels and rebates in coach body work.
