The Record No. 044 (and related No. 043) are British plough planes — grooving planes for precise grooves and tongues. Produced by C&J Hampton Ltd. of Sheffield as part of the Record specialist range. Less extensive than the Record 405 or 050, focused purely on grooving.
Plough plane vs. combination plane
A plough plane is a specialised grooving tool — unlike combination planes (No. 45, 55, 405) it does not offer profile irons or complex systems. It is simpler, more precise, and more reliable for purely grooving operations. The fence is adjustable to distance from edge.
Record 043 vs. 044
The No. 043 has a smaller capacity (to 3/4"), the No. 044 larger (to 1"). Both share the same basic mechanics. British equivalent of the Stanley No. 78 (rabbet plane) or No. 46 (combination skew) for basic grooving.
